Cleanings

Dental cleaning, also known as a dental hygiene appointment, is a preventive dental procedure performed by a dental hygienist or dentist. It involves the thorough cleaning of your teeth and gums to remove plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains. Dental cleaning is an essential part of maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing dental problems such as cavities and gum disease.

Regular dental cleanings are typically recommended every six months for most people. However, your dentist or dental hygienist may suggest a different frequency based on your individual oral health needs.

Nightguards

A nightguard, also known as an occlusal guard or dental splint, is a dental appliance used to protect teeth and alleviate certain dental issues that can occur during sleep. It is typically worn at night and fits over either the upper or lower teeth. Nightguards are custom-made by a dentist or dental professional to ensure a proper fit and effectiveness.

Nightguards serve several purposes, including:

  • Teeth Grinding (Bruxism) and Clenching: Bruxism is a condition in which an individual unconsciously grinds, clenches, or gnashes their teeth, often during sleep. This can lead to excessive wear on tooth surfaces, enamel erosion, tooth sensitivity, jaw pain (temporomandibular joint or TMJ pain), and headaches. A nightguard provides a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, helping to prevent the damaging effects of grinding and clenching.

  • TMJ Disorders: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ disorders) can cause pain, discomfort, and dysfunction in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. A nightguard can help alleviate TMJ-related symptoms by promoting a more relaxed jaw position and reducing the impact of clenching or grinding.

  • Protecting Dental Work: People who have dental work such as crowns, bridges, or veneers may be advised to wear a nightguard to protect these restorations from excessive forces during sleep.

If you suspect that you are grinding or clenching your teeth at night or if you experience symptoms like jaw pain, headaches, or tooth sensitivity, it's important to consult with a dentist. They can evaluate your condition, recommend appropriate treatment, and if necessary, create a custom nightguard tailored to your needs.
